The U.S. Department of Labor has identified 114 worker trait groups, into which all jobs can be placed on the basis of the extent to which each job is involved with working with information (Data), working with people (People), and working with tools, machines, or materials (Things). Jobs grouped under this system also require similar worker qualifications and temperament. The Guide describes the 114 groups under the same headings as the Dictionary of Occupational Titles (D.O.T.), Volume 2; but the information, while essentially the same, has been re-written as a career planning aid for students or others without specialized training. The two-page format for each of the worker trait groups consists of three sections: (1) identification, including examples of workers in the group and the level of their involvement with data, people, and things; (2) a description of the group, including the work performed, qualifications, helpful personal characteristics and experiences, and necessary training; (3) a qualifications profile for workers, including working conditions, training time required by different jobs in the group, and a list of necessary aptitudes; and (4) additional information including cross-referencing with the D.O.T.
