Vegetable Soup Activities.
Shepard, Mary; Shepard, Ray
Vegetable Soup is a new children's television series whose purpose is to counter the negative and destructive effects of racial isolation. This manual gives detailed instructions for discussion of activities that are presented during the television series such as: crafts, games, recipes, language activities, and children's questions. A list of recommended children's books is also included. These projects can be carried out with large and small groups as well as with individual children. They may be used as activities for reading, science, maths, arts, and social studies. The crafts section contains nine games and eleven crafts having various ethnic origins. Thirteen ethnic recipes are included in the cooking section. Activities focusing on language introduce the child to the ethnic influences on the American language of words such as ketchup and cola. This section also explains how and why native American sign language is used. The section on children's questions provides activities designed to answer questions about race, people and life in general. Questions were compiled by the TV show's researchers from conversations with children from many ethnic backgrounds. Although this book provides followup print material to the television series, the activities stand on their own and may be used with children who have never seen the show. (Author/AM)
