The book presents an overview of American worker dissatisfaction in the 1970's, based upon three separate national surveys taken among two groups: blue and white collar union member workers and the young American worker under 30 years of age. The text is preceded by a foreward by Harvey Swados, an authors' preface, and an introduction by Michael Maccoby. Chapters are divided into five sections and include: (1) The Myth of the Happy Worker, Chapters 1 and 2, presenting an overview of the work force and discontented white male blue collar workers; (2) Blue Collars on Borrowed Time, Chapters 3, 4, and 5, discussing the nature of the workers' job tasks, their effects upon worker alienation and political orientation, and job security; (3) The Young Worker, Chapters 6, 7, and 8, discussing the under-30 workers; (4) Opportunity and the Older Worker, Chapters 9 and 10, examining mid-career malaise and second careers; and (5) Possibilities for Change, Chapters 11 and 12, discussing solutions and employer points of view and policies.
