Using as a framework Ferguson's diglossia model with its division into a high and a low variety of the language used, the linguistic situation in the Sudan in described as a continuum. At one end is found the very formal classical Arabic, used for special occasions. At the other end is a casual form which dominates meetings and social gatherings of the elite. In the middle of the continuum is another variety of the language used in classrooms and courts, for example. To fully describe the linguistic reality, regional varieties are also taken into account, as well as differences in men's and women's usage. The Arabic vernacular must be considered as a potential national language, particularly the Arabic of Khartoum. In the future, language planning efforts in the Sudan should include a reaffirmation of the vernacular, but not, however, at the expense of the classical language. Other language planning needs include grammars of the various vernaculars and materials such as dictionaries and textbooks. The process of implementing and coordinating standardization efforts would be helped considerably by the establishment of a specialized agency to deal with language planning problems such as standardization of the lexicon, syntax and orthography. National language policy should also be integrated with educational and economic development. (CLK)
