This book is for geography and social studies teachers who wish to impart to their students a realistic appreciation of Africa and Africans. It is divided into four parts. The first comprises eleven essays, by African and some foreign scholars, that provide a conspectus of current issues and preoccupations in Africa today. Topics include the meaning of Africa for Americans; the characteristics of the African; the Physical environment of Africa; sociocultural conditions discussed in essays on population, history, and languages; economic conditions approached through essays on urbanization and agricultural development; and politics--political change, state formation, and the race problem of Southern Africa. The second part is concerned with resources and materials available for teaching about Africa, including special attention to using contemporary African literature in the classroom. The third part concentrates on approaches to the teaching of Africa: "Teaching African Geography as an Interdisciplinary Adventure,""Teaching about Social Change,""The Case for the Economic Development Approach," and "Applying the 'New Geography'." The final part is concerned with teaching strategies from simulations to sketch maps and includes units on manufacturing and on geographical relationships in West Africa.
