The directory is provided by the Council on Medical Education of the American Medical Association (AMA) in collaboration with 29 other medical organizations, which are listed in Section 1 with names of officers and addresses. A brief history of the council follows, along with a statement of its basic principles for the accreditation of allied health educational programs. Section 2 is devoted to statistics on medical occupations programs broken down by State; educational requirements for each occupation; and number of programs for each occupation, their graduates, enrollment, and capacity. There is a brief review of accreditation studies. Section 3 discusses problem areas in subjects ranging from education programs (including those for military personnel) to legislation, research, and terminology. A fourth section focuses on the accreditation process; Section 5 lists specific educational programs by State. Section 6 describes in detail each of 24 medical occupations, providing a description of the occupation, essential requirements for programs, and a list of accredited programs.
