This session of hearings began with an opening statement by Senator Edward M. Kennedy. Such witnesses as the following then gave testimony: Dr. William E. Conner, co-chairman, Panel on Nutrition and Health, University of Iowa; A. Yanechik, Arizona Department of Health Services; Dr. J. Farquhar, Stanford University Medical Center; Dr. E. Bierman, University of Washington; Dr. R. Arky, American Diabetes Association; Dr. W. Kirkendall, Department of Medicine, University of Texas at Houston; Dr. F. Iber, Medical School , University of Maryland; Dr. C. Lieber, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine; and others. Also included is the "Report of the Panel on Nutrition and Health." This report is organized into 16 parts, dealing with the following topics: the role of nutritional factors in coronary heart disease; nutrition and diabetes mellitus; nutrition and hypertension; nutrition in liver disease; nutrition in moderate alcohol drinkers; nutrition in alcoholism; nutrition and cholesterol gallstone formation; nutrition and oral health; problems and needs related to anemia; nutrition and reproduction and family planning; nutrition and health of infants and children; section on growth and development; nutrition and aging; nutrition and cancer; report of the subsection on obesity and disease; and, report of the subpanel of health care systems.
