Learning to Work. Sage Contemporary Social Science Issues 4.
Geer, Blanche, Ed.
The collection of readings reflects some of the findings of a five year cooperative research project entitled Educational Experiences of Non-College Youth that focused on four areas of occupational training: (1) apprentices, (2) private trade schools, (3) training courses in the armed forces and (4) on-the-job training. Control of training, the substantive fit of training and work, the articulation of training with employment, the fit of classes to on-the-job training, testing and evaluation, the openess of the learning situation, and the opportunity for self-evaluation are dimensions touched on in the studies. Included in the publication are: The Story of the Project (Blanche Geer); Students Without Teachers: Student Culture at a Barber College (Clyde M. Woods); Binging: Educational Control Among High Steel Ironworkers (Jack Haas); Structural Constraints on Learning: Butchers' Apprentices (Hannah Meara Marshall); Situational Learning in a School with Clients (Marilyn S. Notkin); Learning to Sell Door to Door: Teaching as Persuasion (Robert Bogdan); Individuality in a Factory (Esther Young); External Control of Recruits: The County Jail School (Lewis A. Mennerick); and A School Is a Lousy Place to Learn Anything In (Howard S. Becker). (MW)
