This document investigates the measurement of faculty workload. Emphasis is placed on the uses and values of faculty workload studies, various methods of measuring faculty workload, including measures based on course inventories and faculty reports, recommended procedures for making a comprehensive faculty load analysis, and uses of faculty load data. Recommended procedures for making a comprehensive faculty load analysis include the formation of a faculty advisory committee; determination of guiding policies; development of report forms; content of faculty activities report; distribution and collection of forms; and tabulation, analysis, and reporting of results.
