In this paper the author presents ideas of some science educators who, in their writing, have emphasized problems of re-orienting specialists for teaching unified science. The paper makes a few preliminary suggestions on how specialist teachers may be given the necessary assistance in scientific content, philosophy and teaching strategy to prepare them to teach integrated science. Suggestions are grouped under the following headings: (1) Curriculum Development, (2) Pre-Service and In-Service Training, and (3) Within-School Practice. Throughout the paper special references are made to developments in Australia where the author has been closely associated with integrated science programs for grades 7 to 10 and grades 11 and 12 in the secondary schools of New South Wales.
