The purpose of this investigation was to study the growth in self-concept of boys who were enrolled in a remedial reading clinic during a six-week summer session. Forty-two boys between the ages of 8 years 0 months and 12 years 12 months who were enrolled in the 1972 summer session of the University of Maryland Reading Clinic served as subjects. Pretest and posttest assessments of self-concept were obtained using the Self-Concept as a Learner Scale. The other variables measured were: auding quotient with the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test; cognitive style with the Children's Embedded Figures Test; teacher assessment with the Teacher Assessment of Pupil Progress developed specifically for this study; and reading level/grade level index with an average score obtained from the Botel Word Recognition Test and the Botel Word Opposites Test. Some of the conclusions drawn from the findings were: there is a positive relationship between self-concept growth and auding quotient, there is a positive relationship between self-concept growth and a measure of cognitive style adjusted for age, and there is a positive relationship between self-concept growth and reading level/grade level index.
