Space Technology for Rural Education; Brazil Experiment. Project SACI.
Cusack, Mary Ann
An eight-year project--Project SACI--begun in 1969 is introducing technology into Brazil's educational system. It is based upon the hypotheses that technology can deliver education to more students, increase achievement, and provide cost-effective teacher education. To rest these hypotheses, Project SACI aims to bring satellite transmission of educational programs to 500 primary schools (grades 1-4) involving 3000 teachers and 25,000 students across a rural area of 100,000 square kilometers. The project's objectives are to: 1) test the efficiency of education based upon technology and a systems analysis approach; 2) develop techniques for producing educational software; 3) discover means of obtaining the acceptance of technologies in rural communities; 4) operationalize satellite and ground delivery systems; and 5) train, at the graduate level, specialists in educational technology and systems analysis. The project is proceeding on schedule through 1974, for teachers and supervisors are being trained, courseware is being developed, and the requisite hardware being prepared, including the projection of a satellite launching in 1976. In addition, in conjunction with Project SACI the graduate program in educational technology has produced its first graduating class. (PB)
