This course guide examines the theme of war in literary works. Works studied include the short stories of Stephen Crane, Ernest Hemingway, and William Faulkner; novels such as "The Red Badge of Courage" and "All Quiet on the Western Front"; and a variety of poems by writers from several countries. Students' performance objectives include assembling materials that depict the various aspects of war, investigating war as a catalyst for individual and societal change, and defining the nature of war.
