Men Under Law. A Simulation Approach to the Teaching of Civil Liberties.
Gale, John J.
An inquiry approach, coupled with a simulation technique, is utilized in a kit designed to teach civil liberties to high school classes. This booklet, normally accompanied by five flow charts and a cassette, first presents the instructions for the simulation. Then, five constitutional case studies and excerpts from their Supreme Court decisions are interspersed with simplified flow charts. The case studies, presented in order of increasing difficulty for the student, contain a statement of the pertinent law, narration and question sections, and arguments for the defense and prosecution at each level of appeal. The legal terms used in the excerpts of Supreme Court decisions are listed and defined and a copy of the U.S. Constitution is included. An entire class participates by forming small groups which are given the responsibility for developing the argument for one particular case. Each group further subdivides into prosecution and defense. All students serve in the role of Supreme Court Justice at least once. (KSM)
