The purpose of this book is to illustrate how the principles revealed by linguistic research can be translated into classroom practice. Emphasis is placed on: (1) a methodology which offers opportunities for children to create knowledge based on their observations of language tested against their intiutive speech, and (2) a content which is structured to reveal the interrelationships of vocabulary, syntax, morphology, and phonology as elements of meaning. Rather than break down sentences which have already been written, children create their own sentences in terms of problems to be solved. They realize that they possess both a power to manipulate sentences as they create language and an appreciation for many styles of communication as they observe language. The teacher must structure situations in such a way that children can discover for themselves the interrelationships of the elements of language. One chapter each is devoted to the content, the sound, and the structure of language and to English as a second language. An 80-page handbook, "Applying Linguistics in the Classroom," is the principal part of the text. (TO)
