Occupational Exposure to Asbestos; Criteria for a Recommended Standard.
National Inst. for Occupational Safety and Health (DHEW/PHS), Rockville, MD.
Recommended standards for control of exposure to asbestos dust in the workplace are set out from the following standpoints: environmental, medical, labeling, personal protective equipment and clothing, apprisal of employees, work practices, and monitoring and recordkeeping requirements. The goal is maintenance of a low level of concentration to preclude initiation of diseases resulting from exposure, in accordance with provisions of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. The biologic effects of exposure to asbestos dust are described at length. Previous standards are reviewed. A 76-item reference list is included. Appendixes cover air sampling methods, a numerical hazard rating system, a material safety data sheet, tables indicating output data of various types of asbestos plants, and tables relating exposure to death by lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestiosis, and digestive system cancer.
