This guidebook is designed to be both a resource book and a tentative curriculum outline. The language arts program described for grades 7 through 10 attempts to provide students with a basic background from which they can draw information and skills as needed for their successful work in the English electives offered in grades 11 and 12. The basic skills considered include reading, writing, speaking, listening and library skills, and basic experiences with literature. Electives outlined for grades 11 and 12 include creative writing, the structure of the English language, journalism, advanced composition and research methods, mass communication, basic public speaking, critical thinking, a survey of American literature, a survey of English literature, Shakespeare, world literature, the short story, the novel, poetry, drama, and mythology.
