This study presents statistical information gained from a survey of women employed full-time in Federal civilian collar employment as of October 31, 1971 in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, the 50 states and the territories of the U.S., and foreign countries. Excluded from the survey are members and employees of the Congress, employees of the Central Intelligence Agency, and the National Security Agency, and noncitizens outside the U.S. Comparisons of the 1971 data with data from the 1970 survey revealed that: (1) The number of women in better paying jobs in the Federal Government increased significantly between October 1970 and October 1971, (2) Gains for women were reported at nearly every grade level above GS-4 of the general schedule or equivalent rates, with women accounting for over half (50.3 percent) of the total net increase in jobs at the GS-7 through GS-12 levels, and (3) Occupational groups in which women made the greatest gains were occupations associated with medical and health service, business and industry, education, and social science, psychology, and welfare. Data are presented by agency and geographic area, by general schedule and equivalent grades, and occupational group. Data pertaining to full-time white-collar employment in the postal service are appended. (SB)
