Aural Study Systems for the Visually Handicapped. Interim Progress Reports No. 9 Description of the Aural Study System-No. 10 Field Trial of the Aural Study System.
Morris, June E.; And Others
The Aural Study System was devised for visually handicapped elementary and secondary school students to learn more efficiently through listening rather than reading, and was tested in two field trials. Components included a record player, a foot control, records in textbook format, written material, and a written key for locating textual pages on the record. The textual unit was from A Global History of Man, by L. Stavrianos and others (editing procedures explained). Results of the first field trial, a 30 task test on locating and operating components, indicated that 94% of the 32 Ss in grades 5 to 12 located the place of a specific topic in the recorded test (the most difficult task); however, some of the problems Ss encountered were amplifier and further technological failure, and confusion in use of hand or foot control. Results of the second trial, to ascertain whether braille students could use the system for common study tasks, showed that all 24 Ss in grades 9 to 12 wrote some responses in braille to four study tasks (answering question, copying quotation, and outlining and summarizing text sessions), that 11 to 15 Ss performed adequately or better, that in addition to problems encountered in the first field trial, other problems were Ss' inability to judge distances, or poor alphabetizing, listening, spelling, and memory skills. Conclusions were that students could use the system after receiving more instructions and after refinements were incorporated in the system. Appended are equipment and materials checklists and study questions, functional level and educational level tests, the training program, and a subject data sheet. (MC)
