Guidelines for the Pursuit of Full Humanity in a Secondary English Program.
Lovern, Mary Frances
This study investigated current criticisms of education and attempted to determine a rationale and establish guidelines for change in the secondary English program. What was sought was an English curriculum emphasizing humanistic ideals. An attempt was made to formulate guidelines for such a curriculum which would be realized through (1) integration of language, literature, composition, and film study; (2) student involvement; (3) problem-posing education; and (4) dialogical encounter. The guidelines for this English program include two sections. The first section describes the concept, organization for action, and methodology of thematic investigation of the program. The second section presents two ways of implementing the guidelines (through an adolescent novel and a film). Five implications of the study relate to educational change, teacher education, school administrators, the English program, and further research. (Author/DI)
