Three different experiments were conducted to examine several variables that influence the recall of prose. In Experiment I a study was made of the influence of differing imagery level nouns as the subject and object of the preposition of a sentence; it also provided a further test of the conceptual peg model, i.e., the concrete-concrete-subject and object nouns were recalled significantly better than noun combinations of concrete-abstract, and abstract-abstract. Experiments II and III determined whether complex sentences embedded with meaningful paragraphs are recalled better if (1) the sentences are constructed in the active or passive voice and if (2) the described events within sentences are presented in the same sequence as their correct temporal order. Contrary to previous results, active and passive sentences were recalled equally well and complex sentences were recalled better when the events within a sentence came in the same sequence as their temporal order.
