Environment and the Social Sciences: Perspectives and Applications.
Wohlwill, Joachim F., Ed.; Carson, Daniel H., Ed.
This anthology contains papers originally presented at a meeting of the American Psychological Society and some selected from previous publications. The papers are arranged under three major headings: (1) "General Environmental Conditions" (with sub-heads: "Crowding and Population Density" (four papers), "The Behavioral Side of Air Pollution" (three papers)); (2) "Special Environmental Settings" (with sub-heads: "Institutional Settings" (four papers), "Residential Areas" (five papers), "Recreation Areas" (four papers)); and (3) "Environmental Decision Making" (three papers). All papers concern some aspect of the behavioral responses in man-environment interactions, but not all are written by psychologists. There are papers by geographers, architects, ethologists, ecologists, planners, natural resource managers, psychiatrists, and sociologists. The editors contribute an extensive introduction and an epilogue where the role of behavioral scientists in study of environmental and behavioral science is summarized and future research prospects essayed.
