Study abroad programs have become more and more widespread over the past several years, and presently 25,000 students are involved in some kind of foreign study program for which academic credit may be earned. Critics of foreign study programs feel that the movement for international and intercultural education has expanded too quickly and without proper guidance and supervision. They further feel that intensive evaluation of existing programs is the only way to ascertain that the programs are beneficial to those they serve. Such an evaluation program would become costly if financial and manpower resources are not pooled. Thus, a cooperative venture of several regional accrediting associations is suggested as a means of study abroad program evaluation. Such a venture would not be looking at the programs as a separate institution to be accredited, but rather as a program within an institution with regard to its management, its effectiveness, and its necessity.
