Unit: Science and Safety, Inspection Set, National Trial Print.
Australian Science Education Project, Toorak, Victoria.
This unit, a trial version prepared by the Australian Science Education Project, is intended to create in students an awareness of the potential hazards of a science room, to help build confidence by teaching safe techniques of apparatus manipulation, and to demonstrate the utility of planning work thoroughly. The safety principles are extended to the students' other activities at school, home, and leisure. The teachers' guide suggests classroom techniques, lists references and audio-visual aids, and lists materials needed for each section of the unit. The students' booklet introduces the use of the separate "Laboratory Safety Checklist," and contains ideas for ten optional activities that draw attention to safety principles and hazards in the street, at home, and at play. Other materials included in the package are: science room hazard sheet, science room safety certificate, safety officer's duty list, and a set of "danger" stickers. (AL)
