Enquiry Work in an Urban Setting. Information Booklet.
Schools Council, London (England).
The purpose of this information booklet is to look closely at the organization of the educational experiences of two fourth-year forms in two English urban secondary schools who studied some features of their immediate environment. The first 6 week field project, Houses and Flats: A Planned Enquiry into the Local Area, involved 34 low ability boys and girls in a modern school in a residential area. Historical maps were consulted and information extracted through sketch maps concentrating attention on the land use changes from a rural to a high-density urban residential area, and leading into an enquiry about the cultural, economic, social, and moral consequences for the people living there. An interdisciplinary approach resulted: geography, history, English literature, aesthetics, and social problems. The second 6 week student project, Derelict Land: Seizing on the Neglected Areas, involved 40 boys and girls in a fifty year-old school amid the tangle of industrial communities that have merged to make up the Black Country. The derelict site is a slag and ash covered colliery, blast furnace, and worker cottage area. Two groups worked on carefully teacher guided surveys of the area; four other groups concentrated upon historical and geographical features of land use, industrial development, and population changes; and, two others emphasized social implication of planned redevelopment. Questionnaires, maps, group class discussion, drawing, small group field work and followup work were methods used in both projects. (Author/SBE)
