Within the Calgary school system, a series of pictorially programed instructional booklets (Articulated Instructional Development booklets) are used for the multiple-activity approach to teaching industrial arts. Using a random sample of 100 students from eighth graders enrolled in the materials section of the Calgary Plan, a Q-Sort instrument was used to obtain data on student perceptions of mechanics, content and utilization. Each card solicited individual opinions on a certain subject, illustrated by an example or picture. The findings indicated that all groups agreed on five of the nine practices related to the mechanics of the booklets, with five of the seven related to content, and with seven of the nine practices related to utilization. A priority listing of the 25 standards related to the development of instructional materials employing pictorial content were established from the feelings indicated by the students with respect to the booklets.
