Developmental Efforts in Individualized Learning.
Weisgerber, Robert A.
The readings presented here survey the state of the art in individualized learning as of 1970. They are directly concerned with operational approaches and include descriptions of national systems for the individualization of learning, descriptions of approaches tried in particular schools and colleges, and a look into the future of education as it would be influenced by individualized learning. Illustrations of individualized learning in practice, samples of materials used, and diagrams suggesting various methods of organization round out the picture of current practice in individualized instruction. Several readings are devoted to two national individualized instruction systems, Project PLAN (Program for Learning in Accordance with Needs) and IPI (Individually Prescribed Instruction). A number of individualized programs in use in elementary and secondary schools and in colleges and universities are described more briefly. An article by John I. Goodlad projects the effect of the individualized learning concept on the future of education. The editor provides an introduction to each section, and a subject index is supplied. (Author/JY)
