The Hard of Hearing Child: Clinical and Educational Management.
Berg, Frederick S., Ed.; Fletcher, Samuel G., Ed.
The chapters by various specialists presenting information on the aurally handicapped child and his clinical and educational management are divided into three sections. The brief introductory section presents an overview of the work to follow, defines the hard of hearing child, describes his prevalence, and traces the locus of educational programs for him. The eight chapters of Part 2, Basic Considerations, cover the following topics as they relate to the hearing impaired: the hearing mechanism, levels of communication, acoustic phonetics, functional analysis of behavior, counseling, linguistics, language development, and the potential of current trends in public education for the hearing impaired. The final eight chapters concern specific planning for the hard of hearing child in both the clinical and educational realms: case history interviews, differential diagnosis, psychological examination, program planning, instructional media, educational audiology, auditory training, and reading. Theory and research are used to support points of view and suggestions. (KW)
