The papers in this volume, except for the last one, were delivered at the March 1970 National Conference of the American Association for Higher Education held in Chicago. Part I deals with "who should decide who goes to college," and contains a paper by Wayne Morse who concludes that it is the people who should make the decision, since it's for society's general benefit, and society must support higher educational financially; and a commentary by Stephen J. Tonsor, who asserts that financing should be up to the student and that freedom of choice can only be assured through an adequate financial aid system. Part II deals with the issue of "who should go to college," and includes a paper by William M. Birenbaum who accuses higher education of primarily serving the middle class, challenges the assumptions of collegiate experience, and concludes that "we are no longer prepared to tell anyone that he should not go." The commentaries are by Timothy S. Healy and Robert S. Babcock. Part III discusses "open admissions to what?" and includes papers by Peter Schrag and Theodore M. Newcomb, and a commentary by Edmund W. Gordon. The last section, Perspectives on Open Admissions, includes a paper by Leo A. Munday and Philip R. Rever, which attempts to synthesize some of the important concepts presented in the earlier papers as well as in other writings. (AF)
