This study was developed to determine whether differences in teaching effectiveness resulted from two types of in-service education programs designed to orient beginning teachers to an industrial arts curriculum. The programs and evaluation instruments were based on three objectives: (1) To help teachers to learn the objectives and content of the course, (2) To help them grow in teaching proficiency, and (3) To help them grow professionally. The instruments that were developed are: (1) the Teacher Assessment Inventory, and (2) the Supervisor's Observation Instrument. The subjects were randomly selected to form three groups and were given the pretest. One group received a 4-day orientation institute, one received two visits from the industrial arts supervisor and a monthly mailing of information, and the third group was a control group. After a 5-month period, a posttest was administered. The conclusion was that on the basis of performance measured and the concomitant outcomes, the contributions made by both programs had increased teacher effectiveness and were directly related to costs.
