This study of the adjustment and acculturation of Cuban refugees living in West New York, New Jersey investigates the hypotheses that: (1) The formation of a tightly knit community aids in the adjustment of first generation Cubans, although in the short run it may retard their acculturation, and (2) Adjustment and acculturation are easier for persons from middle class backgrounds than for immigrants from poorer families. In order to evaluate programs which have attempted to help the Cubans to adjust, the researchers interviewed agency officials and gathered all available data from various public and private agencies. A random sample of 250 of the refugees in West New York, constituting roughly 10 percent of the total, were interviewed in order to gather first-hand data. The study concludes that governmental programs have been far less effective than the refugee community in aiding adjustment, and despite a severe downward occupational mobility which increases with social class, job satisfaction and adjustment have been surprisingly good.
