This monograph reviews theory and procedures of evaluation as reflected in the professional literature and in correspondence from chairmen of departments of English and the Humanities. Introductory comments are followed by chapters on: the evaluation of teaching; teaching and values; student evaluation of faculty and courses; observation of classes; inspection of teaching materials and annotated student papers; assessing the results of instruction; circumstantial evidence; teacher self-evaluation; conclusions and questions; and some recommendations. Appendixes contain: (1) sample forms for student rating of faculty; (2) a form for peers to use in making an evaluation; (3) a form for faculty self-evaluation; (4) a procedure for handling classroom observation; and (5) part of a department's chairman's evaluation form, emphasizing results of instruction.
