California "Right-to-Read" Invervention Model. Final Report.
McElligott, Joseph P., Jr.
A summer research project in the teaching of reading to inner-city children through the utilization of Catholic school personnel as volunteer workers is described. Chapter 1 describes the origin and development of the project--a statement of its purpose, a proposal requesting Federal aid, establishment of criteria for selecting students, plans for recruitment of personnel, and a summary of the results. The second chapter describes the program in more detail. Summaries are given of (1) the total professional personnel, 78 percent of whom were religious and the remaining 21 percent lay people; (2) the student population of 502 pupils, the majority of whom were Negro or Spanish surname and almost equally divided as to enrollment in nonpublic and public schools; (3) the instructional program; and (4) curriculum materials used. Chapter 3 presents an evaluation of the project by listing the results of pretests and post-tests and various questionnaires which were responded to by teachers, administrators, secretaries, aides, students, and parents. The final chapter summarizes conclusions and offers recommendations for continuing and expanding such centers in other cities. Appendixes and tables are included.
