Foreign Language Entrance and Degree Requirements for the B.S. Degree.
Wolfe, Warren J.
This survey, conducted by the Modern Language Association of America, of B.S. degree requirements in foreign languages is intended to supplement a survey on requirements for the B.A. degree published in 1953. The compilation of statistics, collected from questionnaires sent to 1,005 registrars of accredited four-year colleges and universities, shows that of the 568 schools offering the B.S. degree, 393 (69.2%) require foreign language study for the degree and 131 (23.1%) require foreign languages for entrance. Comparable percentages reported in the B.A. survey were 83.9% and 28.3%. Many of the institutions that do not list a foreign language requirement do expect students to complete courses in second languages for certain major fields. Institutions which may not grant the B.S. degree offer science and mathematics majors a B.A. degree; such non-liberal arts graduates are, thus, required to know foreign languages. The survey is arranged by state and then by institution with symbols indicating whether or not a requirement exists. (DS)
