Processes of Mathematics: A Definitional Development and an Experimental Investigation of Their Relationship to Mathematical Problem Solving Behavior.

Studied were the effects of a knowledge of the behaviors associated with mathematical processes on problem-solving ability. Processes defined for the study were those involving: (1) construction of mathematical models, (2) conjecturing, (3) settling conjectures as being true or false, and (4) application of given axioms and theorems to problems. A standard measure of spatial relations ability was chosen as the criterion instrument for an experiment with 17 college students. No significant relationship was found between spatial relations ability and problem-solving behavior. The only significant change occurred in settling conjectures. (RS)
