Prevocational English. Texts 1-2, Workbooks 1-2.
Institute of Modern Languages, Silver Spring, MD.
The Institute of Modern Languages'"Prevocational English" series (Levels I and II) is designed to teach basic conversational English while providing an introduction to technical skills. Each student's text has 20 lesson units of four parts each: Part I covers language used in everyday social situations; Part II introduces new structures and vocabulary through "Situation Sequences"; Part III covers technical materials presented through situations, teaching basic information about tools, measuring, mathematics and various trades; Part IV contains an illustrated reading followed by comprehension questions. When applicable, the comprehension questions are followed by personal questions which give the student an opportunity to talk about his own activities. The "Situation Sequences" and the "Personal Questions" sections are intended to ensure that the student is "involved in meaningful communication, not mere memorization of the text." The corresponding workbooks for Levels I and II provide written reinforcement of the text materials and each contains 20 two-part lessons consisting of illustrated questions and illustrated readings. An accompanying Teacher's Manual is forthcoming. For a description of the IML's "Situational Reinforcement" series, see ED 024 935. (AMM)
