The 18 lesson units in this three-volume tape-recorded course in Quiche represent a first attempt to present the modern spoken language of approximately 400,00 inhabitants of the central highlands of Guatemala. (A brief description of the language background and the research involved is given in the Foreword.) The lesson format includes a presentation of basic sentences, pronunciation practice, grammar, drills, "listening in," conversation, and vocabulary. Every sixth unit is a review. Quiche material appears in phonemic transcription with intonation indicated. Instructions to the teacher for presenting drill material and to the student for response procedures are provided. Tapes accompanying the course are available at cost from the Language Laboratory of the University of Chicago. (AMM)
