Because of inadequate preservice and in-service mathematics training programs, a critical need existed to provide quality in-service mathematics instruction for teachers in sparsely settled areas of Appalachia. A computer assisted instruction (CAI) course was developed for use with the IBM 1500 system which utilized an integrated approach relying on tutorial activity at the computer, printed instructional materials, and manipulative devices to be used at the terminal and in the classroom. Four hundred and forty-four students registered for the course; 387 completed the course. Using data compiled from this field study the achievement and attitudes of the students were evaluated and the relationships among achievement, attitude, and time measures were analyzed. Student opinion toward CAI was surveyed. Using this data as feedback some revisions were made in the curriculum.
