This study is concerned with the position of women on the social science faculties in the graduate divison of the University of Chicago. The history and experience of several women faculty members in the various social science departments is reviewed. A few generalizations can be drawn: (1) few women are hired and few stay more than the length of one appointment (3 years); (2) the first appointment is usually that of Instructor or Lecturer, rather than Assistant Professor; (3) those who stay generally remain in untenured positions for an abnormally long time; and (4) those who become full professors do so by rising through the "women's departments" or are brought in from other universities at a tenured position. It appears the University is not free from male chauvinism and sex discrimination in its employment practices. The appendix includes a list of the women on the Social Sciences Faculties 1892-1968 as listed in the graduate catalogs, fellowships given in the social sciences by sex, and tables on the numbers of men and women faculty members, by rank and salary, and on the number of students by sex in the college, the graduate school and degrees awarded.
