A survey was made of evening program policies and practices at 64 private institutions, 26 state universities, eight state colleges, and nine junior colleges. Aspects considered were admission policies; titles of divisions, schools, or colleges; faculty recruitment and responsibility; scheduling; fees; research; general policies; and public relations and student recruitment. Findings included the following: most institutions had flexible admission policies enabling adults to take credit courses as special, nondegree, or part time degree students; 51 charged lower fees, and 53 the same fees, for evening students; 66 had 50% or more full time faculty teaching in the evening; full time faculty were generally hired by evening directors or deans or by department chairmen; evening directors or deans generally did the scheduling; 24 institutions reported adult education research projects either completed or in progress; 37 were involved in Upward Bound and other types of innovative programs; students participated at least partly in academic program planning in 65 institutions; 58% of institutions reported adequate support for evening programs; most used newspapers, but few used television, for publicity.
