Emerging Outlines of a New Rhetoric.
Wisconsin Council of Teachers of English.
Six papers presented at the 1966 Workshop of the English Association of Greater Milwaukee suggest that the "new rhetoric" has been shaped by fresh professional interest in ancient rhetoric, in the creative process, in the grammar of English, and in the scholarship of such men as I.A. Richards and Kenneth Burke. The papers are concerned with (1) creativity and the act of composition as one form of an "encounter of the intensively conscious human being with his world," (2) a dramatistic approach to composition in which Burke's elements of act, scene, agent, agency, and purpose are elucidated, (3) various ways to broaden the student's personal experience as a source for composition material, (4) the use of metaphor in teaching students to speak and write more vividly, (5) the use of model cumulative sentence patterns to help slow learners write sentences that are structurally sound and that incorporate vivid detail, and (6) a description of transformational-generative grammar and its significance.
