Growing Up In College. Liberal Education and Maturity.
Heath, Douglas H.
This study of Haverford College is akin to a case study; it illustrates how a model can be used to order the developmental process, to illuminate potential types of maturing effects, to explore the relation between an institution and the growth of its members, and to suggest hypotheses about healthy growth. The methods, findings, and implications of the study are systematically organized by an empirically verifiable theory of healthy development, based on the author's earlier studies of maturing. Heath sees the college setting as a powerful maturing social environment, and calls for a greater emphasis on liberal education, an education which leads toward individual fulfillment. The chapters include: (1) Becoming Mature, A Theoretical Exposition; (2) A Liberally Educating College; (3) The Changing Generation; (4) Plan and Procedures; (5) The Maturing Student; (6) Alumni Experiences; (7) Principal Effects of the College; (8) The Determinants of Maturing; and (9) A Reevaluation, A Retrospective Analysis.
