The Use of the Language Laboratory in Intermediate and Advanced Classes.
Valette, Rebecca M.
NALLD Newsletter, v2 n3 p4-7 May 1968
Now that teachers and administrators have become aware of the administrative organization of the language laboratory and the daily routine essential to the proper functioning of its equipment, attention ought to be focused on its more creative use in enhancing the learning processes. This orientation in attitude is reflected in the newly generated name, "Machine Aided Learning Laboratories." Although language laboratories have developed the mechanical aspects of language learning, they have not provided for the awareness of meaning, recognition of correctness, and the acquisition of habits essential in learning to communicate in a second language. Allowances for creative activities to supplement intensive exercise at the intermediate and advanced levels can be made through the wider use of dialog exercises and anticipation drills. New and little explored areas of creative potential lie in the use of the laboratory to (1) develop listening skills, (2) provide supplements to literature classes, and (3) correct written themes.
