Variables Related to MDTA Trainee Employment Success in Minnesota.
Pucel, David J.
To predict a person's use of his Manpower Development and Training Act (MDTA) training, this study attempted to supplement existing methods of evaluation, using personal descriptive data about trainees and General Aptitude Test Battery Scores. The sample under study included all students enrolled in ten MDTA projects, representing a geographical cross section of Minnesota, training to be technicians, sales and clerical workers, and skilled workers. Data revealed many significant implications: student confidence and skills increased after training; a relatively large number dropped out of the technician and skilled programs; and a large number remained unemployed after the sales and clerical training. Employment counselors need to be aware of personal characteristics which lead to success, and training should concentrate on work related attitudes. Attitudes and skill together are the best predictor of success, but more research should be done to validate these results with a larger study and to identify ways of improving attitudes during training. (A few references, the teacher evaluation of students, and tables of students' personal data are given.) (jf)
