DESIGNED AS A SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR PROFESSIONALS PREPARING INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIALS, PLANNING COURSES, OR DEVELOPING CLASSROOM TECHNIQUES FOR FOREIGN LANGUAGE PROGRAMS, A SERIES OF STUDIES HAS BEEN PREPARED THAT CONTRASTS, IN TWO VOLUMES FOR EACH OF THE FIVE MOST COMMONLY TAUGHT FOREIGN LANGUAGES IN THE UNITED STATES, THE SOUND AND GRAMMATICAL DIFFERENCES OF THESE TARGET LANGUAGES AND ENGLISH. THIS VOLUME ANALYZES THE COMPLEX GRAMMATICAL DIFFERENCES FOUND IN ENGLISH AND ITALIAN BY TREATING PRIMARILY THE SIGNIFICANT CONTRASTS. FOLLOWING A BRIEF INTRODUCTION ON THE ORGANIZATIONAL TREATMENT OF THE STUDY OF GRAMMATICAL DESIGN AND THE RELATIONSHIP OF PARTS OF SPEECH AND MEANING TO THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM AND GRAMMATICAL ANALYSIS, CHAPTER TWO (1) EMPHASIZES THE WORD AS A UNIT OF GRAMMAR, (2) ESTABLISHES THE PARTS OF SPEECH OF ITALIAN AND DESCRIBES THEIR MORPHOLOGY, AND (3) MAKES RELEVANT COMPARISONS WITH ENGLISH PARTS OF SPEECH AS AN INTEGRAL PART OF EACH SECTION. DISCUSSED EXTENSIVELY IN CHAPTER THREE ARE THE IMPORTANT DIFFERENCES THAT OCCUR IN THE STRUCTURES AND FUNCTIONS OF THE CENTERED AND SUBORDINATE PHRASES AS WELL AS THE PRINCIPAL AND SUBORDINATE CLAUSES OF BOTH LANGUAGES.
