A STATEWIDE STUDY OF K-12 TEACHER SUPPLY AND DEMAND IN CALIFORNIA FOR THE 1965-1975 PERIOD FOUND THAT--(1) THERE WILL BE LARGE ANNUAL SHORTAGES OF NEW ELEMENTARY TEACHERS IN THE NEXT 10 YEARS BUT AN ADEQUATE SUPPLY OF SECONDARY TEACHERS. (2) A MAJOR FACTOR IN THE ELEMENTARY TEACHER SHORTAGE IS A CHANGE IN THE NUMBER OF CERTIFICATED GRADUATES IN RECENT YEARS. (3) THERE IS NO CHANGE IN THE PROPORTION OF CALIFORNIA STUDENTS INTENDING TO TEACH. (4) BESIDES REQUIRING LONGER PREPARATION, ELEMENTARY TEACHING, AS COMPARED WITH SECONDARY TEACHING, IS SEEN AS LOWER IN PRESTIGE AND PAY, OFTEN MORE DIFFICULT, AND OFTEN LESS DESIRABLE BECAUSE IT AFFORDS NO OPPORTUNITY FOR SUBJECT SPECIALIZATION. (5) MOST INFLUENTIAL IN CHOICE OF A TEACHING CAREER IS K-12 TEACHER-PUPIL CONTACT. (6) IN COLLEGE, INFORMAL ADVICE AND INFORMATION IS MOST INFLUENTIAL IN THE CHOICE OF TEACHING AS A CAREER. (7) UNDERSUPPLY RECEIVES MORE ATTENTION THAN OVERSUPPLY AT CALIFORNIA TEACHER PREPARING INSTITUTIONS. (8) COLLEGES ARE INCREASINGLY AWARE OF THEIR RESPONSIBILITY TO PREPARE SUFFICIENT QUANTITIES OF WELL-EDUCATED TEACHERS. (9) A VARIETY OF FACULTY OBSERVERS DOUBT THE APPROPRIATENESS OF ELEMENTARY TEACHER EDUCATION CURRICULA. (10) MANY SCHOOL DISTRICTS HAVE EXTENSIVE RECRUITMENT PROGRAMS ON CAMPUS (THOUGH FEW REQUIRE TRAINING OF RECRUITERS), BUT POSITIONS FOR EXPERIENCED TEACHERS ARE LARGELY FILLED THROUGH UNSOLICITED APPLICATIONS.
