Reys, Robert E., Ed.; Reys, Barbara J., Ed. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1987
The focus is on suggestions for teaching rounding wisely as an estimation strategy. (MNS)

Moore, Theodore F. – Mathematics Teacher, 1986
Presents a technique for multiplying two-digit numbers whose tens digits are equal and whose units digits have a sum of 10. Then various mental calculations with other types of two-digit and larger numbers are discussed. (MNS)

Hampel, Paul J. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1984
A program is given which offers students a chance to practice mental computation and judge the effects of various rules for formating output. (MNS)

Heirdsfield, Ann – International Group for the Psychology of Mathematics Education, 2005
This paper reports the teacher actions that promoted the development of students' mental computation. A Year 3 teacher engaged her class in developing mental computation strategies over a ten-week period. Two overarching issues that appeared to support learning were establishing connections and encouraging strategic thinking. (Contains 2 figures.)…

Levine, Deborah R. – Journal for Research in Mathematics Education, 1982
Relations among the number and types of strategies used by 89 college students when estimating, quantitative ability, and computational estimation ability were investigated. Students of relatively high quantitative ability were found to be better estimators and used more strategy types. (MP)

Jensen, Arthur R. – Intelligence, 1990
The performance on a battery of cognitive tests of an individual with extraordinary ability at mental arithmetic was studied. Implications of the rather ordinary test performance of Shakuntala Devi in contrast with her calculating speed are discussed with reference to memory and information processing. (SLD)

Thompson, Gary W.; And Others – Mid-Western Educational Researcher, 1992
Fourth grade students participated in mental arithmetic activities for eight weeks. Posttests revealed that the experimental group performed significantly higher than the control group on arithmetic problem solving and arithmetic computation. Females appeared to benefit more from the instructional program than males. (KS)

Dietz, Charles – Perspectives in Education and Deafness, 1993
Strategies for rapid mental computation are explained, including multiplying by 11 (or 21, 31, etc.); adding columns of numbers; and multiplying 2-digit numbers. Rapid mental computation is suggested as a motivator for investigating the underlying mathematical principles. (DB)

Andaloro, G.; Bellomonte, L. – Computers & Education, 1998
Presents a student module modeling knowledge states and learning skills of students in the field of Newtonian dynamics. Uses data recorded during the exploratory activity in microworlds to infer mental representations concerning the concept of force. A fuzzy algorithm able to follow the cognitive states the student goes through in solving a task…

Pratt, Nick – Cambridge Journal of Education, 2006
This article reports on the English National Numeracy Strategy (NNS) and, in particular, on the way in which children aged from 8- to 11-years-old view "interactive whole class teaching". A qualitative, grounded study of both teachers' and children's perceptions of interactive teaching was undertaken, making use of "video stimulated…

French, Doug – Mathematics in School, 1987
Choosing mental, written, or calculator procedures is important for children to learn. Children should be encouraged to be flexible and consider alternatives when doing mental calculation. Developing mental skills, symbols and rules, and numbers in context are each considered. (MNS)

Reys, Barbara J.; Reys, Robert E. – Arithmetic Teacher, 1986
After summing up the current status related to estimation and mental computation, what needs to be done to promote increased instruction on these topics is discussed. (MNS)

Isaacson, Dan – Creative Computing, 1982
A set of three problem-solving programs designed as drills that give practice in mental arithmetic are reviewed. The programs are viewed to have several weaknesses in style, but are noted as worthy of consideration for purchase. The material is designed to motivate students to practice all four basic operations. (MP)
