Coley, John D.; Hayes, Brett; Lawson, Christopher; Moloney, Michelle – Cognition, 2004
Previous research (e.g. "Cognition" 64 (1997) 73) suggests that the privileged level for inductive inference in a folk biological conceptual hierarchy does not correspond to the ''basic'' level (i.e. the level at which concepts are both informative and distinct). To further explore inductive inference within conceptual hierarchies, we examine…

Vanides, Jim; Yin, Yue; Tomita, Miki; Ruiz-Primo, Maria Araceli – Science Scope, 2005
Teaching science in middle school is both rewarding and demanding. Creating an exciting learning environment with a rich science curriculum that engages all students is challenging enough. Monitoring the progress of as many as 150 individual students and knowing that they understand the science concepts we are teaching can be overwhelming. How can…

MacKinnon, Gregory R. – Journal of Technology and Teacher Education, 2004
The education of science teachers necessarily involves instruction around the use of computer technologies. Acadia University, a laptop institution, offers a unique setting where students are immersed in the critique of pedagogical applications of computers. The current trend to employ constructivist approaches in teaching provides a backdrop for…

Eriksson, Lars Torsten; Hauer, Amie M. – Journal of Marketing Education, 2004
In this conceptual article, the authors describe an alternative course structure that joins learning key marketing concepts to creative problem solving. The authors describe an approach using a convergent-divergent-convergent (CDC) process: key concepts are first derived from case material to be organized in a marketing matrix, which is then used…

DeLong, Matthew; Winter, Dale; Yackel, Carolyn A. – PRIMUS, 2005
We review the processes of goal identification employed in teacher planning. A new type of graphical organizer (Fact-Action-Schema-Transcript or FAST) is introduced and its applications to teacher planning discussed. We describe a pair of algorithms for (a) creating FASTs for undergraduate mathematics and (b) using FASTs to create sets of student…

Roy, Patricia; Hord, Shirley M. – Journal of Staff Development, 2004
What do the National Staff Development Council's standards look like in practice for teachers, principals, central office staff, superintendents, and board members? Newly developed Innovation Configurations help everyone on the list understand where they fall along the continuum of effective practices aligned to the standards.

McCallister, Gary – Journal of College Science Teaching, 2005
The DNA triplet code also functions as a binary code. Because double-ring compounds cannot bind to double-ring compounds in the DNA code, the sequence of bases classified simply as purines or pyrimidines can encode for smaller groups of possible amino acids. This is an intuitive approach to teaching the DNA code. (Contains 6 figures.)

Ertl, Bernhard; Kopp, Birgitta; Mandl, Heinz – Journal of Educational Computing Research, 2006
This article focuses on facilitating learners' collaborative knowledge construction in case-based learning scenarios. The article first describes how case-based learning can promote knowledge acquisition and then discusses the characteristics of videoconferencing in such scenarios. Then we focus our attention on the process and outcomes of the…

Kilpatrick, Sue; Millar, Patricia – International Journal of Training Research, 2006
Extension (industry training) and VET (the formal Vocational Education and Training system), each vital to Australia's education and training for agriculture, have developed as separate domains. Recent research suggests that the potential of closer alignment should be further explored. Extension provides usually non-certified courses to primary…

Cools, Carine A. – Language and Intercultural Communication, 2006
This qualitative study utilises the relational dialectics of Baxter and Montgomery (1996) to examine the relationship communication of six heterosexual intercultural couples living in Finland. In this study, I attempt to answer the following questions: what cultural issues are relevant in the couples' relationship? What intercultural relational…

Plotnick, Eric – 1997
This ERIC Digest discusses concept mapping, a technique for representing the structure of information visually. Concept mapping can be used to brainstorm, design complex structures, communicate complex ideas, aid learning by explicitly integrating new and old knowledge, and assess understanding or diagnose misunderstanding. Visual representation…

Okebukola, Peter Akinsola; And Others – 1993
This paper provides a brief review of research on concept mapping in biology at the college level that has addressed the issues of "conceptual transparency" and "learner friendliness." For many college students, biology is "conceptually opaque." Students may memorize the characteristics of a plant, but find it difficult to identify that plant in…

Ruiz-Primo, Maria Araceli; Shavelson, Richard J. – 1997
A concept-map assessment consists of a task that elicits structured knowledge, a response format, and a scoring system. Variation in tasks, response formats, and scoring systems produce different mapping techniques that may elicit different knowledge representations, posing construct-interpretations challenges. This study examined two mapping…

Schreiber, Deborah A.; Abegg, Gerald L. – 1991
This study presents a quantitative method for scoring concept maps generated by students learning introductory college chemistry. Concept maps measure the amount of chemical information the student possesses, reasoning ability in chemistry, and specific misconceptions about introductory and physical chemistry concepts. They provide a visualization…
