Retaining Teachers: An Action Research Study on the Importance of Support and Mentorship
John Walter Goff
ProQuest LLC, Ed.D. Dissertation, Northeastern University
Teacher turnover can have a negative impact on school districts. This study sought to examine the causes for teacher turnover and to find solutions to increase teacher retention. Data collected in Cycle 1 originated from interviews with 10 continuing contract teachers focusing on their experiences in the classroom. From cycle 1 data, action steps were designed, implemented and evaluated to provide a plan for a mentor program aimed to increase teacher retention. Cycle 2 action steps followed a framework consisting of a 6-week program intended to foster positive connections between veteran and probationary teachers. Upon conclusion of the program, participants were interviewed and responded to a questionnaire concerning the experience. Evaluating the results of this action research project included a complete review of participants' experiences and observations. The study concluded that teacher retention can be increased through positive, supportive mentoring programs. Positive mentoring programs can be established through support from both colleagues and administration, empowering teachers to make their own connections and by providing teachers autonomy to make decisions concerning their mentoring process. Implications for the school include higher teacher retention, improved student performance, and a decrease to the financial burden of the district.
