Evaluating the Efficacy of Remote Habit Reversal Training in Reducing Speech Disfluencies among Adults

Public speaking is a skill used in many professions. This study examined the impact of awareness training (AT) and competing response training (CRT), two components of habit reversal training, on the use of filled pauses during public speaking. Following baseline, these components were administered remotely to reduce the occurrence of filled pauses, such as "uh" or "um," with four adult participants. This study was the first to utilize a clicker as an awareness enhancement device (AED) during habit reversal training to cue participants. The findings revealed a decrease in the frequency of filled pauses following AT, with a subsequent reduction observed after the CRT intervention. Participants were able to maintain their reduced use of filled pauses in a generalization probe, which included an audience.
